Bergama

While staying at Odyssey Guest House, you will be able to easily explore Bergama's most famous sites: the Acropolis, the Asclepion and the Red Basilica. The Acropolis is on the hill just behind Odyssey Guest House and is an easy walk from here. The impressive amphitheater at this site holds 10,000 people and is one of the steepest in the world. The Asclepion is an ancient medical complex that is thought to have been in existence since the 4th century BC. It is also walkable from Odyssey. The Red Basilica, originally a temple built to honor the Egyptian god Serapis, is just a block from Odyssey. Bergama's archaeological museum is in the center of town on the main street and is well worth a visit.

Region

There is a wonderfully appropriate sign on the outskirts of Bergama wishing you happy travels and a return visit to Bergama, the largest open-air museum in the world. Wandering the back streets of Bergama is an adventure that is almost always rewarded with a magical discovery: an intricately carved ancient fountain, a Greek column used as a doorstep, an historic Ottoman cemetery, a synagogue, a still-buried Roman theater, an as yet unnamed stone bridge or an ancient caravansaray. As you walk along the river in Old Town, just south of the Red Basilica, and just before the stone bridge, you will see the ruins of Bergama's tanneries. Another river site that you will not want to miss is the huge evening congregation of turtles and frogs in the shallows of the river, all accompanied by very loud frog and cricket song and whirling swallows overhead.

Day Trips from Bergama

Odyssey Guest House can be a wonderful home base from which to explore nearby cities with ease: Dikili, Çandarlı and Ayvalık. Transportation is easy by minibus. Dikili and Çandarlı have wonderful beaches and Ayvalık's narrow, cobbled streets are fun to wander as they are lined with old Greek houses and oldfashioned commerce sites. Another day-trip is the famed archaeological site, Allianoi; a rental car or taxi is needed to reach this site.
